Easter April 24, 2011

So, there are a million and one great Easter songs out there…but I think my favorite this year is Matt Maher’s “Christ is Risen”  Partly because it’s a great song, and a lot because he has done a fantastic Easter series this year, the music is on the beginning and end of each video, so it’s been what I’ve heard the most!  The lyrics and some links to the Easter series and other goodies are below.  Enjoy and share.

Lyrics

Let no one caught in sin remain
Inside the lie of inward shame
But fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to Him who showed great love
And bled for us, Freely You bled for us

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bowed to none but Heaven’s will
No scheme of hell, no scoffer’s crown
No burden great can hold You down
In strength You reign
Forever let Your church proclaim

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

oh death, where is your sting?
oh hell, where is your victory?
oh church, come stand in the light
Our God is not dead
He’s alive, He’s alive!

Story behind the lyrics

taken from http://mattmahermusic.com/music.php

God really is a genius (duh!). He used death to destroy death. He did not even have to lift a finger. He literally tricked death into destroying itself. Jesus used the process of death to completely eradicate it. So now it just becomes a process of transformation, now it is a window or a doorway. Every Easter in the Ukraine, congregations chant the phrase, “Christ is risen from the dead trampling over death by death, and redeeming us from the grave”. I thought, “that is an amazing thought to sing. We should sing it in the west.”

March Family Update March 28, 2011

Lydia is 4 months old now.  She weighed 15lbs 10oz at her well check last week, but Caleb and everyone at church thinks she gained a ton over the weekend.  She is  a super smilie baby, and loves to talk.  She will play with just about anyone, but her eyes really light up for her sister.  She can almost sit up on her own, but doesn’t roll yet.  She is starting to give her sister’s trademark mean face sometimes.

Rachel is a little over 2 1/2 now.  I don’t think her size has changed all that much.  This month I asked her to sing the ABC’s to her sister, I thought she could get to about J or K, but she sang her the whole song!  She also likes to sing Happy Day – verses and all, and Jesus Loves Me.  She likes to help me paint and garden.  She has also learned to just hook Caleb’s 4 wheeler up and can just about start it – we’re going to have to start taking the battery out when it is parked!

Caleb is still working away on school stuff, but I think he’s getting faster!  He is also starting to use his reading in the real world, which was good at Bible Study and interesting in children’s church 🙂

I am doing little projects here and there as I get time.  Lately most of the time has been going to gardening stuff – starting seeds, planting spinach, making a strawberry planter.  I’ve also been trying to do little things around the house – organizing and a little extra cooking – as I get time.  I’m very excited about our new-to-this-house book case – which will help get some stuff off the floor and looking better!

Caleb and Rachel went camping this month!  Lydia and I hung out for a while – but we came back home to visit with Faith and sleep in real beds 🙂  Rachel loves being outside, and would make a great Mogele (ignore my terrible spelling) from The Jungle Book.  She had gotten in the creek twice by the time Caleb got everything set up.

We had two birthdays last weekend – which has Rachel on a bit of a birthday kick, she sings the song and talks about presents a lot!

We also (finally) got to go spend the night with Haley, who I lived with in college all 4 years!  We had been trying to plan this venture for at least a year, but it finally happened.  Friday night our senior year room mates Heather and Kristen came to hang out too.  Saturday we slept in and watched the kids play.  It was wonderful!

I also let the girls start taking a bath together this month.  Despite the fact that they are not photogenic (see above), they both LOVE taking a bath together!  It’s also much easier for me to give them a bath at the same time.

Raised Bed for Strawberries March 24, 2011

I bought some strawberry plants.  My mom has her’s in big wash bins, and I like the way it looks.  The bag also says it needs good drainage, so I wanted them in something up off of the ground, so I could control the drainage a little better.  So, I went on the hunt.  I found an old cooler that had been retired to holding rec equipment and wasn’t being used.  It looked pretty rough (not that it really matters what it looked like), so I also found some old paint we weren’t using and some paint brushes that were on their last leg.  I grabbed my helper and my supervisor and we went to work!

We painted two coats of some sort of interior/exterior paint that appeared to be for either concrete or cars – the label was pretty much completely covered from whenever it was used last, so I’m not really sure what it was.  Maybe if we get adventerous later we can paint some sort of design on it, but it looks pretty good and works for now!  Now we just need to borrow husband’s drill to put some holes in for drainage, fill it up with some dirt, and plant our berries!  I’m very excited, they are supposed to be everbearing and have “high yield!”

February Update March 1, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — multipurposemom @ 2:09 am

So, obviously, I haven’t started blogging regularly yet…but I thought I could do a quick family update!

We’ll go from youngest to oldest 🙂

Lydia is growing WAY TOO FAST!  She is 3 months old now, and a little over 14lbs.  She is a wonderful baby.  She likes to eat, smile at her sissy (and sometimes mommy and daddy), and sleep.

Rachel is entertainment as always.  She is getting better at the potty.  She absolutely loves Lydia and pretty much has her spoiled with attention.

Caleb is slaving away with school work.  I think he’s getting faster with it, and after these HOI classes are over the rest should seem super easy!

I am an idea factory as always.  I’m currently collecting materials for crafts to do at camp this summer.  Sometime in the near future I hope to have a trial day for everything – exciting stuff!  When I’m not working, helping Caleb with homework or being wife/mommy I have been crocheting and knitting a lot.

We are all looking forward to the end of winter.  I have been taking the girls for walks everyday in anticipation of it being pretty enough soon to leave the blankets and jackets behind!

ok – I feel like that was very brief…but it’s better than nothing 🙂

and the thing everybody wants from a monthly update…

Snow Day! January 11, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — multipurposemom @ 11:36 pm

Lydia went out in the snow for the first time today!

(I know, shame on me for not at least setting her out to get a picture on her first Christmas – which was white.)

Rachel and Daddy did pretty well on the sled.

And the best part of fun in the snow…Rachel is taking a nap!

Idea Factory! January 1, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — multipurposemom @ 9:34 pm

I am an idea factory.  I come up with crazy ideas all the time with no plan for carrying them out share them with the powers that be (husband or boss, pending the situation) and smile as they look at me like I’ve completely lost it!  Having an infant means the idea factory has been in overdrive, as I am awake a lot during not made for humans hours.  Due to the crazy looks from others, my ideas have been centered mostly around things I can do (after I catch up some on sleep).

Now, let’s note:  I don’t make new year’s resolultions.  While I understand the theory, it’s just not good for me for a few reasons.

  1. I would wait until Jan. 1 of the next year, even if it is Jan. 3 of the current year for a needed change.
  2. During this wait, I would forget what the change was – perhaps that it ever existed.
  3. From what I can gather – most people have a fairly low success rate with these resolutions.

I’m sure there are other reasons, but that seems a good place to stop!

But my idea factory overflow has coincided with the holiday, so this post will seem timely.  A few of my ideas are:

  • make things!  crocheted – hats and washcloths to start, jewlery – hemp, magazine necklaces, etc.  I can sell these things on etsy, maybe to finance my idea factory into reality.  Or give them to the camp store so we can have more reasonably priced items than the ones we have to buy from wholesalers.
  • start “home schooling” Rachel.  I noticed that she remembers a ton of stuff and is very smart.  I would like learning to be just a regular life thing for her and not a regimented school activity.  I would also like to capitalize on her ability to remember so easily (which I also posessed until I went to college).  So, I think we might start being intentional, while not rigid, about learning.  Hopefully to including the potty, simple building blocks of knowledge, and Bible verses…
  • Memorizing scripture.  I’m terrible at it.  So, after a long thought train that I’ll spare you – the plan is to begin memorizing verses based on the Jesse Tree.  One verse per month and knowledge of the background of the verse.
  • Blogging.  So we will have a record of our journeys, maybe some feedback from you, and a bit of structure(I’m not great with structure)/accountability.  Now – the idea factory needs parameters to keep from spiraling out of control, so this is the plan (for now, that I reserve every right to change).  Monthly Monday – First monday of the month:  Bible verse, Second: craft, Third:  book review, Fourth:  family update, Fifth:  guest blog.  Teaching Tuesday – a record of what I am learning and teaching Rachel, maybe some cool techniques/activities if I stumble on any. On a Whim Wednesday -everything that doesn’t fit anywhere else:  kitcheny things, cleaning things, life stories, you get the idea. Thankful Thursday – an effort to appreciate how blessed I am and brag on the Lord.  Five Minute Friday – Tell you about something (fruitful or fun) that I accomplished in 5 minutes.  Series Saturday – Pick a topic and blog about it in a somewhat logical manner until I’m all out of ideas about it, then move on to another.  Starry Sunday – Phil 2 tells us to shine like stars.  We might think on how to shine like a star or look at an example of a bright star!

So – now that you know about all those ideas.  Blogging will remain random until at least February.  Remember the part about catching up on sleep.  I also want to have a few blogs stored up so hopefully, I won’t have to take a blogging break.  Now, it might remain random a little longer pending life (the children, how busy I am with camp things, Caleb going back to school, etc.).  But, I do hope to be a little more intentional about life – it just might take a while 🙂
